You think 7 years makes you an expert? I was in for 30 years, and there are others here who were in longer. So your boasting of 7 years is wasted here.

The information is not "free". When the publisher picks up his literature supply, he or she is expected to deposit a contribution in the box.(For expected contributions I refer you to a KM from 1995 which actually itemized the price of each item. For example a CD-Rom from the WT should exact a $100 "contribution") Perhaps other posters still have that KM and could quote from it. Furthermore, once these items are "placed", a plea for a donation is then required (separate and distinct from the literature, of course, for tax purposes). These contributions are then expected to be deposited in the box. So if everything is done as expected, this "free" literature is paid for twice.

If I remember correctly, special pioneers receive money from the Society on a regular basis. (Although I seem to remember it not being very much)

There is more than one way to "prey" on us as followers. The financial aspect is only one way. The WT Society is a master of this art.

Since my wife is Catholic, I have had to attend a few functions at a variety of Catholic churches. I was shocked to find that what I had been taught my whole life about how the collection plate is used in the Catholic church was not true. There were not large openings to let the change fall through to the floor. They didn't coerce you to contributing by intimidation (holding it in front of you until you donated). Yes, these were all things I was taught at the local KH. The fact was, that unless you made clear indication that you wanted to donate, the plate never even came down the row. I found this a lot less objectionable than a contribution box in every corner of the KH, and at the end of every row at a convention.

When it comes to paying taxes (or not) the WT Society once again are experts at not paying Caesars things to Caesar. Why don't you examine the 1990 change to donations that happened in CAnada nad the US, and more recently in Australia.

When I was still attending, my friend and I would leave during the Wt study, go have breakfast somewhere, and slip back in just as it was wrapping up. I remember the occasional Thursday nights slipping out for a beer, and making it back just in time for it to end. At that point, it was agony for both of us to attend those awfully boring meetings.

I was 12 years old. Despite all the hype, my family didn't really do anything differently. It came and went with little notice.

Do JWs still believe the WT version of the 144000?
by nicolaou inthe society have taught for many years that only 144,000 individuals will have embraced true worship from the time when jesus (and presumably john the baptist six months before him) began his ministry in about 30 c.e.
when the great crowd began to be drawn in.. however, even a casual reading of the book of acts shows the phenomenal growth of christianity during the time of the apostles.
in colossians ch1 paul even makes the comment that the good news had at that point been preached to all creation that was under heaven.. in 64 c.e, there were so many christians in rome already that nero felt he could easily blame them for the destructive fire which had swept through the city.

I could never bring myself to explain why the 144,000 was to be taken literally, as explained by the WT, to people at the door. Remember the explaination? It was something like this: "Since the Lamb is mentioned in the singular in Rev 14:1, obviously the 144,000 is also a literal number."
Even as a gung-ho MS, I had a huge problem with this. Take a look at the verse. "And I saw, and look! the Lamb (symbolic, for Jesus is not an actual lamb) standing upon the mount Zion (symbolic place) and with him a 144,000 (literal?????) having his name and the name of his Father written on their foreheads (symbolic once again). In fact all three places where this number appears are surrounded with symbolism.
This verse is, as is the rest of Revelation, 100% symbolic. I believe that the number 144,000 is representative of a larger number, perhaps even a "great crowd" as mention in Rev 19:1.

by abcde inits easy too criticize a religion.any person can do that.trash talking isnt accepted that well amongst the majority of people.why not find something better too offer people.now that would be a better thing too do.this board will probably fizzle out after a while.

Abcdef raises a good point. It is easy to criticize too much. I think there is a danger in being 100% negative, to the point of actually grabbing at straws to make the JWs look bad.
I have in mind the whole issue of the hidden pictures in JW literature. Sure, I've seen them too, but does this alone mean the WT society is run by Satan? How many businesses have employees that do stupid things (like putting these pictures in). I'm sure that's what happened, and it snuck by the half sleeping proof readers. Dwelling upon issues like this, I think anyway, doesn't help our credibility.
But back to the point... The JWs have enough faults which are valid, and if we stick to the serious legitimate problems, we will have much better success at helping people see the real truth.
Just my humble opinion... BTW, Abcdef, I hope you stick around here. I enjoy your posts.

by one inhow longo it took you to find out your mate was cheating you, kidding.
really how long it took you to find out the truth about the truth or at least to become really distrust about the whole thing, and why.. to start i just knew, by summer 1974, that big a was not comming on 1975. the oil embargo, nixon etc kept me worry for a while.
i even resigned a very lucrative and promising job to piooner.

When the old Revelation book came out in 1969 (I think) I remember not accepting the fact that the trumpet blasts of Revelation were fulfilled by assemblies in Cedar Point. That made no sense to me whatsoever. Oh ya, I forgot to mention, I was 6 years old at the time!!

He sure has a way of taking every single word of the Bible literally. I remember once that he quoted some scripture and said that it was foretelling cars traveling down highways. The scripture had something to do with moving lights, but it was quite a stretch to equate it with cars.
I was just curious as to what others thought of his opinions. I know my wife gets pissed at me when I watch him. She says his body language screams out volumes about him, and not in a positive way!

British JWs ignoring the GB.
by dmouse inwhen we have american jw relatives visit they are frequently shocked at the difference between how they live their lives and how jws over here live.
its almost as if we are from two different religions.. that divide seems to be getting wider.
i have noticed in the past two or three years a noticeable relaxation among british jws.
